Frequently Asked Questions

How much topsoil do I need?
Calculate: Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. For a 1,000 sq ft lawn at 4" deep: 1,000 × 0.333 ÷ 27 = 12.3 cubic yards.
How much does topsoil weigh?
Dry topsoil weighs approximately 2,000 lbs per cubic yard (1 ton). Wet topsoil can weigh 2,500–3,000 lbs per cubic yard. One cubic yard fills about 1.5 pickup truck beds.
How deep should topsoil be for a new lawn?
New lawns need 4–6 inches of topsoil. Gardens and raised beds: 8–12 inches. Topping up existing beds: 1–2 inches.
What is the difference between topsoil and garden soil?
Topsoil is the top layer of earth (variable quality). Garden soil is topsoil amended with compost and nutrients. Use garden soil for planting; topsoil for filling and grading.
