Plywood Calculator

Calculate the number of plywood sheets needed for subfloor, sheathing, or other panel applications.

Our free Plywood Calculator lets you calculate the number of plywood sheets needed for subfloor, sheathing, or other panel applications. It is built for contractors, DIY renovators, and homeowners planning building projects who need fast, reliable results without installing software or creating an account.

Plywood Calculator runs entirely in your browser on CalculatorsPlus — enter your values, get instant results, and copy or share your output in one click. Your data never leaves your device; we do not store inputs on any server.

Accurate material estimates prevent costly over-ordering and mid-project shortages. Measure carefully, add a waste factor for cuts and breakage, and use the plywood calculator output as a shopping list starting point.

Results update in real time as you change inputs, so you can explore "what if" scenarios — adjust one variable at a time to see how it affects the outcome before committing to a purchase, plan, or decision.

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Stagger joints between rows for stronger subfloors and sheathing.
  • Use exterior-rated plywood (CDX or better) for any exterior application.
  • Let plywood acclimate to the job site for 24–48 hours before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are standard plywood sheets?
Standard plywood is 4×8 feet (32 sq ft per sheet). Available in thicknesses from 1/4" to 3/4". Half-sheets (4×4) are also sold at some retailers.
How many sheets do I need?
Divide total area by 32 (sq ft per 4×8 sheet). Add 10% for waste and cuts. Example: 500 sq ft ÷ 32 = 15.6 → buy 17 sheets (with waste).
What thickness for subfloor?
3/4" (23/32") plywood is standard for subfloor with joists 16" on center. For 24" spacing, use 7/8" or 1-1/8" tongue-and-groove panels.
What is CDX vs BCX plywood?
Letters indicate face/back grades (A=smooth to D=rough). CDX: rough both sides, exterior glue (for sheathing). BCX: one smooth side, exterior glue. AB: smooth both sides (for cabinetry).
