Paver Calculator

Estimate the number of pavers, sand base, and edge restraints for patios, walkways, and driveways.

Our free Paver Calculator lets you estimate the number of pavers, sand base, and edge restraints for patios, walkways, and driveways. It is built for contractors, DIY renovators, and homeowners planning building projects who need fast, reliable results without installing software or creating an account.

Paver Calculator runs entirely in your browser on CalculatorsPlus — enter your values, get instant results, and copy or share your output in one click. Your data never leaves your device; we do not store inputs on any server.

Accurate material estimates prevent costly over-ordering and mid-project shortages. Measure carefully, add a waste factor for cuts and breakage, and use the paver calculator output as a shopping list starting point.

Results update in real time as you change inputs, so you can explore "what if" scenarios — adjust one variable at a time to see how it affects the outcome before committing to a purchase, plan, or decision.

This page includes step-by-step instructions, frequently asked questions, and practical tips below the calculator. Bookmark it for repeat use — many construction tasks come up weekly during projects, studies, or financial planning.

Common Uses

  • Estimate materials before visiting the hardware store
  • Compare supplier quotes against independent calculations
  • Budget renovation and landscaping projects
  • Double-check contractor-provided quantities

How to Use the Paver Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter project dimensions

Input length and width of the area to pave.

  2. 2

    Select paver size

Choose paver dimensions for accurate count.

  3. 3

    View materials

See pavers needed, base gravel, sand, edge restraint, and polymeric sand.

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Compact the gravel base in 2" lifts — never try to compact more than 2" at once.
  • Screed the sand layer perfectly flat — imperfections transfer directly to the finished surface.
  • Install edge restraint before laying pavers to prevent spreading over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pavers per square foot?
It depends on paver size: 4×8" pavers = 4.5 per sq ft. 6×6" = 4 per sq ft. 6×9" = 2.67 per sq ft. 12×12" = 1 per sq ft. Check manufacturer specs.
How much base material do I need?
Standard base: 4–6" compacted gravel (crushed stone) plus 1" sand setting bed. Driveway base: 8–12" gravel. Calculate gravel cubic yards: Area × depth ÷ 27.
Do pavers need a concrete base?
No — pavers are designed as a flexible system installed over compacted gravel and sand. This allows movement without cracking. Concrete bases can actually cause problems.
How much sand do I need between pavers?
Polymeric jointing sand: approximately 1 bag (50 lbs) per 25–50 sq ft depending on joint width and paver depth. For the setting bed: 1" depth over the full area.
