Deck Calculator

Estimate deck boards, joists, posts, and screws by deck size and joist spacing — with material examples for wood and composite decking projects.

Building a backyard deck? Enter deck length, width, board width, and joist spacing — get deck area, number of decking boards, joist count, post estimate, and screw quantity in seconds. Works for pressure-treated wood, composite, PVC, and tropical hardwood decking.

Deck material searches peak in spring when homeowners plan outdoor living projects. A typical 5 m × 4 m (16 ft × 13 ft) deck covers 20 m² (~215 sq ft) — enough for a table and grill. At 14 cm (5.5") board width, you need roughly 29 boards running the length plus 10% waste for cuts and end gaps.

Joist spacing drives framing cost: 40 cm (16") on center is standard for wood decking; composite manufacturers often require 30 cm (12") for warranty compliance. A 5 m span at 40 cm spacing needs 14 joists plus rim boards — our calculator counts joists automatically from your inputs.

Worked example: 5 m × 4 m deck, 14 cm boards, 40 cm joist spacing → 20 m² surface, ~32 deck boards, ~14 joists, ~7 posts (approx.), ~400 deck screws. Add railing separately — most codes require guardrails when the deck surface is 30"+ above grade.

Cost ballpark (installed, varies by region): pressure-treated wood $150–250/m² ($15–25/sq ft), composite $250–450/m² ($25–45/sq ft). Material-only is roughly 40–50% of installed price. Use this calculator for the material list; get labor quotes locally.

Always check local building codes for footing depth, ledger flashing, guardrail height, and permit requirements. Free calculator — results are planning estimates, not engineered structural drawings.

Formula

Deck area = length × width · Boards ≈ (width ÷ board width) × 1.10 waste · Joists = floor(length ÷ spacing) + 1 · Screws ≈ 20 per m²

Common Uses

  • Material shopping list before the lumber yard
  • Compare 12" vs. 16" joist spacing material counts
  • Estimate composite vs. wood board quantities
  • Budget screws, joists, and boards separately
  • Plan a ground-level patio deck or raised platform
  • Verify contractor material estimates
  • Size a pergola or attached deck addition

How to Use the Deck Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter deck length and width

Measure the planned deck footprint. For multi-level decks, calculate each platform separately.

  2. 2

    Set board width

Standard decking is 5.5" (14 cm) actual width (nominal 6"). Composite brands vary — check your product spec sheet.

  3. 3

    Choose joist spacing

Select 16" (40 cm) for wood or 12" (30 cm) if composite manufacturer requires it.

  4. 4

    Review material list

See deck area, board count, joist count, post estimate, and screw quantity. Add railing, footings, and hardware separately.

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Example: 5 m × 4 m deck at 14 cm boards, 40 cm joists → ~32 boards, ~14 joists, ~400 screws — verify at the lumber desk.
  • Leave 1/8"–1/4" (3–6 mm) gaps between boards for drainage and seasonal expansion; composite expands more in heat.
  • Flash the ledger board where the deck attaches to the house — unflashed ledgers cause rot and are a top failure point.
  • Use pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact on posts; keep the bottom of posts above grade or on metal bases.
  • Pull a permit — most jurisdictions require permits for decks over 30" high or attached to the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many deck boards do I need?
Divide deck width by board width (plus gap) to get boards per row, then multiply by rows if boards run lengthwise — or use our calculator. Example: 4 m wide deck ÷ 0.14 m board = ~29 boards + 10% waste ≈ 32 boards for one layer.
How many deck boards for a 12×16 deck?
A 12 ft × 16 ft deck = 192 sq ft. Using 5.5" (14 cm) boards: 16 ft width ÷ 0.46 ft per board ≈ 35 boards running the 12 ft length, plus 10% waste ≈ 39 boards. You also need ~13 joists at 16" spacing across the 12 ft span.
How far apart should deck joists be?
16 inches (40 cm) on center is standard for pressure-treated wood decking. Composite and PVC decking often require 12 inches (30 cm) on center — check manufacturer specs or void the warranty. Thinner boards need tighter spacing.
What size beam do I need for a deck?
Beam size depends on span and load. Common rule of thumb: doubled 2×8 for spans up to 8 ft, doubled 2×10 for 10 ft, doubled 2×12 for 12 ft. Always verify with local building code (IRC) and a structural engineer for elevated decks.
How much does a deck cost per square foot?
Material + labor (US, 2024–2025): pressure-treated wood $15–25/sq ft installed, composite $25–45/sq ft, tropical hardwood $30–50/sq ft. A 200 sq ft deck might cost $3,000–9,000 installed depending on material, height, and railing.
How many screws do I need for a deck?
Budget 2 screws per joist crossing per board — roughly 18–22 screws per square meter (2 per sq ft). A 20 m² deck needs ~400 screws. Use coated or stainless screws rated for treated lumber; galvanized can corrode with ACQ treatment.
How many posts does a deck need?
Posts typically every 6–8 ft along the beam. A 5 m × 4 m attached deck might use 3 posts on the outer beam (plus ledger on the house). Higher decks and local snow loads require larger footings — 12" diameter × 48" deep is common in frost zones.
Composite vs. wood decking — how much more material?
Board count is the same for equal coverage; composite boards cost 2–3× more per board but need no stain or seal. Hidden clip systems may need 12" joist spacing and reduce visible screws — add clips to your budget (~$1–2/sq ft extra).
