Final Grade Calculator

Popular

Calculate what score you need on your final exam to get your desired course grade — or predict your overall grade.

"What do I need on the final?" is one of the most searched student queries every December and May. Enter your current course grade, final exam weight, and target grade — instantly see the score required. Switch to predict mode to see your overall grade if you score X on the final.

Extremely seasonal but dominant traffic during finals week. Low competition when the tool is fast, mobile-friendly, and answers both directions (needed score + prediction). Students share these links in group chats every semester.

Formula: Required final = (Target − Current × (1 − FinalWeight)) ÷ FinalWeight. Handles edge cases where the target is already achieved (you need 0% or less) or mathematically impossible (required score above 100%).

Example: 85% current grade, 40% final weight, want 90% overall → you need (90 − 85×0.6) / 0.4 = 97.5% on the final. If that feels unreachable, try predict mode to see outcomes for 80%, 85%, or 90% on the exam.

Free, no login. Confirm final weight with your syllabus — some courses weight homework, midterms, and finals differently than a simple two-component model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Use: Required score = (Desired grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight. Example: 85% current, want 90%, final is 40% → Need = (90 − 85×0.6) / 0.4 = 97.5%.
What if the required score is over 100%?
That means your target grade is not achievable with the given current grade and final weight. The calculator shows the maximum possible grade you can earn.
How do I predict my final course grade?
Multiply your current grade by (1 − final weight), add your expected final exam score times final weight. Example: 85% current, 40% final, score 88% on final → 85×0.6 + 88×0.4 = 86.2%.
Does this work for weighted categories?
This calculator assumes your "current grade" already reflects all non-final work weighted correctly. Enter the final exam weight as a percentage of the total course grade.
